The Burden of Legacy

By March 2026, the theoretical blueprint for Apex Surfaces 2.0 was approved. The mandate was clear: build a future-proof ecosystem capable of leveraging AI, but carry the entire legacy baggage forward.

We could not force external clients or enterprise accounting systems to adapt to our new architecture. The new system had to flawlessly mimic the old integrations.

Moving from the "mental sandbox" to reality meant proving the tech stack. As a Fractional CTO, you cannot choose technologies based on GitHub trends or personal comfort. You must validate them against a decade of messy, real-world business data.

The first test was the foundation itself. We needed a frictionless way to migrate 10 years of operations from MySQL 5.7 to a modern PostgreSQL database over a single weekend, without causing a ripple in the company's workflow.
